In the demolition and abatement field, it is extremely important that all parties on site are knowledgeable and trained in removing and disposing of designated substances.
A designated substance is defined by the Ministry of Labour as “a biological, chemical or physical agent or combination thereof prescribed as a designated substance to which the exposure of a worker is prohibited, regulated, restricted, limited or controlled.”
Below, we list and review the most common designated substances in Canada.
What You Should Know About Designated Substances
Every employer must review the work procedures and methods, and assess the likelihood of worker exposure on a job site.
When there is likelihood of worker exposure, a control program must be instituted that includes engineering controls, work practices, hygiene practices, record keeping, and medical surveillance, if applicable.
The following is a list of all substances classified as designated in Canada:
- Acrylonitrile
- Arsenic
- Asbestos
- Benzene
- Coke oven emissions
- Ethylene oxide
- Isocyanates
- Lead
- Mercury
- Silica
- Vinyl chloride
Safe Removal of Designated Substances
Many of the designated substances listed above are found in commercial properties, industrial facilities, older homes, and a range of other building types. It’s important to educate yourself about these substances and operate in accordance with the law when removing and disposing of them.
In addition, every employer has the responsibility to provide instruction and training to workers who are likely to be exposed to any designated substance or other hazardous material.
The team at TMD is experienced in the handling and abatement of these substances and can assess and safely dispose of them.
